Yang Family Tai Chi – Saturdays and Tuesdays in Canterbury

Yang style Tai Chi is a slow, low-impact exercise combining conscious movements and conscious breathing. The class is suitable for everyone looking to learn own body awareness in a relaxed atmosphere. By keeping movements within their natural alignment and timing them with your breathing according to Tai Chi principles, you will learn how that affects the power and strength that can be generated while alleviating any undue stresses on the joints.

At Magpie Tai Chi, we treat Tai Chi as a living art, playful, curious, and compassionate. The magpie is our guiding symbol: in Chinese tradition it’s associated with joy and good news, while in Western stories it’s also seen as intelligent and inquisitive. Together, these views reflect how we practice, light in spirit, attentive in mind, and open to discovery.

We cultivate Tai Chi through the familiar principles of balance and harmony: finding stillness in motion, strength through softness, and clarity in relaxed attention.

Our classes learn from and credit multiple lineages and teachers. Rather than being dogmatic, we curate what works, the techniques that foster health, awareness, and skill, while acknowledging their sources. We value exploration over rigidity and presence over performance, keeping practice grounded yet unbound by fixed forms.

To “move like a magpie” is to stay lightfooted, observant, and joyful, to balance yin and yang with good humor and humility. At Magpie Tai Chi, we don’t just memorize forms; we cultivate a lifelong conversation between body, breath, and mind, welcoming learners to grow with respect, curiosity, and play.

Classes run on Saturdays at 8:00am and Tuesdays at 5:30pm at Kingsmead Leisure Centre
